Kyrgyzstan is a small Central Asian country which was part of Soviet Union. After the dissolution the country has struggled economically, resulting in a lack of modern infrastructure. Unfortunately, some of the victims of this turmoil are the children with cancer who do not always have access to proper medical care they require. There is only one hospital for the entire country where children can get cancer treatment – the National Center of Oncology located in the capital city Bishkek. It is a public hospital and all of its funding comes from the government. The Pediatric Department at NCO provides care for thousands of children with cancer every year. Many of the patients come from low-income families and rural parts of the country, and cannot afford to seek proper treatment to fight cancer outside of the country.
